Check your roof after monsoon season

Monsoon storms bring wind, hail, and heavy rain. When the season ends, take a few minutes to check your roof from the ground and from inside.

Look from the ground

Stay off the roof. Walk around the house and look up from a safe spot. Binoculars help.

Look for anything that has changed since spring.

  • Missing, lifted, or creased shingles
  • Cracked or moved tiles
  • Dents on vents, flashing, or gutters
  • Shingle granules piled up at downspouts
  • Sagging or loose gutters

Check inside the house

Water can travel before it shows up inside. A stain may sit away from the place it entered.

If you can reach the attic safely, take a flashlight and look up at the roof deck.

  • New stains on ceilings or walls
  • Peeling paint near the ceiling
  • Damp or dark spots on the attic deck
  • Daylight showing through the roof boards
  • A musty smell after rain

When to call

Call if you find any of these signs, or if you are not sure what you are seeing. Take photos from a safe place first.

Note the date of the storm and when you first saw the change. That helps if you talk with your insurer.

Should I climb up to check my roof?

No. A wet or damaged roof is easy to slip on. Look from the ground and from inside. Leave the roof to a crew with the right gear.

Does a small stain need attention?

Yes. A small stain often means water is getting in somewhere. Finding the source early can keep a repair small.
